January 2011
January USAG Newsletter 2011
To All Florida USAG Professional Members
From Toni Rand – Florida USAG
Happy New Year
I hope everyone had a great holiday season! I have some important things for you so take the time to read this newsletter and keep it for future reference.
As we enter the Optional season there are a few reminders:
February 1st – Declaration Date
for 2011 season/level of athlete
Athletes have until February 1st, 2011 to declare their level. Athletes that compete in a level after February 1st may not drop back a level – Athletes may move up if they achieve proper mobility scores.
Mobility Scores – Qualifying Scores: Mobility scores are different than state qualifying scores. National USAG sets all mobility scores for the levels. Athletes must achieve this score in a USAG sanctioned competition in order to move up to the next level. The qualifying scores are set by the Florida USAG State committee. This is the score that must be achieved in order to qualify to the Florida state meets.
State Qualifying score is 32.00AA for all levels except for level 2/3 and Novice PO. Level 2/3 and Novice PO only need to compete AA in a Florida qualifying competition at that level (Novice PO must compete using Florida Novice rules at a Florida Qualifier)
Mobility scores are listed at the National USAG web site and in the R&P.
State Meet information: is available on the Florida web site. Clubs must enter by the deadline dates to avoid late entry fees. I will send clubs email reminders to enter as the season goes on!
The state meets will be hosted by USA Competitions/Twisters (level 7 & PO) and Tim Keckler/Lightning City (level 8, 9 & 10)
Florida Prep Optional Open and Novice levels: All Florida qualifiers must use Florida PO rules if offering PO level. Florida PO rules are posted on the Florida web site.
NEW RULE REMINDER: Very important. All athletes including athletes that competed PO last season must have achieved a 31.00AA as a level 5 in order to compete at the Florida OPEN level OR the Gold or Platinum level of the Regional rules. We will use the Florida Level 5 state meet to check athletes that enter the Florida State meet at PO Open. If your athlete did not compete at the Florida Level 5 State meet you will need to send in a score sheet from the sanctioned meet that the athlete achieved the 31.00AA in order to compete in the State meet. The PO Regional meet will be held in Florida hosted by TBT in the Sarasota area – Manatee Convention center on April 28 – May 1, 2011 – to qualify to the competition athletes must compete AA at the Florida PO State meet. Rules that will be used at the regional competition are posted on the Region 8 web site. Refer to guidelines to determine the level to enter your athletes if you decide to enter. www.region8gymnastics.org
For clarifications on some PO questions received: see judges information later in this newsletter
Level 7, 8, 9 &
10 Regional and National Competition:
Level 7 & 8 athletes will qualify from the Florida state meet to regional meet by percentage. We will have an exact number of athletes as we get closer to the date. Last year out of @325 level 7 athletes Florida had 50 spots (athletes will compete on Friday April 8th in Marietta, GA) At level 8 we had @100 spots – level 8 athletes will compete Saturday April 9th and Sunday April 10th in GA.
The top 8 athletes from both level 7 & 8 will qualify to the Florida Team.
Level 9 & 10 must score a 34.00AA at the State meet to qualify to level 9/10 Regional meet. The meet will be held in New Orleans, LA on April 15 – 17, 2011.
Injury Petitions to Regional meet: NO Petitions are allowed at Level 7 or 8
If you wish to petition an athlete to the level 9 or 10 Regional meet you will need to fill in the injury petition form and follow all directions. Injury petitions MUST be submitted by the Wednesday following the State meet. You may file before the state meet – go the region 8 web site for petition form.
Graduating Seniors: Florida will recognize all our graduating seniors at the State meets. The form will be posted on the Florida web site, the NAWGJ web site and will be emailed to all clubs. It is the responsibility of the Club to turn in the form by the deadline date – thank you
Entry Fees for REGIONAL MEETS: Florida will pay for entry fees for all Level 8, 9 & 10 Regional qualifiers again this year. (@$30,000) Level 7 and PO athletes are responsible to pay their own entry fees.
National JO and Eastern National competitions: Athletes qualify to Nationals from the regional competition. The Tim Rand FUND will pay the $100 entry fee for every level 10 and Level 9 athlete that qualifies to the National competition from the entire region. (@$16,000) Thanks to the donations of so many clubs and individuals the fund has been able to do bigger and better things! To donate to the fund please go to the Florida web site or the Region 8 web site – or send a check to Region 8-TRF and mail to Debby Kornegay 394 Stonebridge Rd Birmingham, AL 35210-4111
Your donation is tax deductible!!
REGIONAL ENTRY PROCESS – VERY IMPORTANT
This year we will start a new process to enter ALL regional meets – PO, Level 7, 8 9 or 10. All entries must be made on line by each club – Clubs are advised to go to the web site at any time to set up their account and to enter the information for their athletes – When your athletes qualify to the regional meet you will then go to the site and check the athletes that have qualified and enter them into the proper regional competition. For PO and Level 7 clubs will also have to pay all entries by credit card when entering the athletes. I will give all clubs instructions or a code that you can enter showing payment for all regional qualifiers at the level 8 9 & 10 levels since Florida USAG is paying entry fees.
YOU WILL NOT BRING CHECKS TO THE STATE MEET AND ENTER AT THE STATE MEET LIKE IN YEARS PAST – YOU MUST ENTER AT THE WEB SITE BELOW BY THE MONDAY FOLLOWING THE STATE MEET!
If you have any questions you can contact Jason@meetmaker.com
When you go to the site you will need to set up your account and profile information including entry information for all of your athletes – start with “sign up New Gym” link to get started follow directions as indicated to complete the registration process – after your account is set up your information will be saved and you will only need to check athletes that qualified for the meet after the State meets.
PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS ONLY FOR REGIONAL ENTRIES – NOT STATE ENTRIES!
YOU WILL NEED TO ENTER ALL FLORIDA STATE MEETS WITH MEET HOSTS – INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ON THE FLORIDA WEB SITE AT WWW.USAGFL.ORG
Florida gains athletes: I was very pleased to see that Florida has again increased the number of registered athletes this year and we are now over 3100 athletes. Florida had 2600 athletes in 2007 and has shown a steady increase since then. In our Region we are the largest state with Georgia the 2nd largest state with 1978 athletes – Mississippi is the smallest state with 430 athletes.
Judges Update:
The mileage rate has been increased beginning January 1, 2011 to .51 per mile.
State Meet availability forms and requirements are now ready and available on line at NAWGJFL
The PO chart has been updated by Vinnie DiMaggio and is available on line.
Clarification: for PO:
Dismount for Open PO Bars – should read that an A salto is required (same as last season)
Leaps and Jumps for Special requirement credit and deductions: Use the JO code of points determination for giving the value/SR – leaps or jumps needed for SR may be given if the split requirement is within 45 degrees or less from the required split degree.
Example: 180 required – the leap could be 135 and receive value
150 requirement – the leap could be 105 and receive value
More than 45 degrees from the required split requirement will NOT receive SR – up to .2 of a deduction may be taken for insufficient split as determined in the code of points.
Novice Bars: Any compulsory skill may be used for value part and Special requirement. Sole circle to stand on bar is considered a circle skill and will satisfy the SR.
NEW Calendar dates and sites: We have updated the Florida calendar with new dates and sites for the 2011, 2012 & 2013 season – Dates have been switched for regional competitions for 2012 – The Great news is that both Level 7/8 regional meet and level 9/10 regional meet will be held in Florida in 2012!
Training camp sites for 2011 have been awarded with Broadway Gymnastics in Orlando receiving the level 7/8 camp in July of 2011 and Orlando Metro receiving the National camp in September – the October camp for level 8-10 athletes will be held in Atlanta, GA. All competitions listed on the calendar are Florida qualifiers – if a meet is not listed then it is NOT a qualifier for the State meet!
Regional Congress – will be held in New Orleans July 15 – 17, 2011
Florida State Clinics – we will host 2 clinics in Florida next summer for judges/coaches and recreation coaches – judges test will be given at these sites
Sites: Balcony in Ocala and Harbor City in Melbourne
Dates – topics – will be sent out this spring
Reminder that State meet bids are due by March 1, 2011 for all 2011-12 State meets. Bid form must be filled in completely with all information provided for the bid to be accepted. The committee will vote on the bids on March 2nd – late bids will not be considered!
Qualifying meets: we will accept Judges request forms/qualifying requests for the 2011-12 season starting January 1, 2011 for all 2012 Optional qualifying invites and April 1st, 2011 for the 2011 Compulsory season – the Judges request form has been sent to all clubs and is available on the Florida web site at www.usagfl.org
That is the news for now – I will continue to send clubs update on my email club list on a weekly basis. Also be sure to read your email updates from the National USAG office. Judges will be receiving updates from Catherine Fariz, NAWGJ State chair as needed.
